Its metropolitan area has approximately 18.1 million and contains the region of Delhi (Ni Dilli in Hindi), the capital of the Indian Union. Administratively, Delhi form the National Capital Territory of the Republic of India, situated between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi became the capital of the Mughal Empire in 1638.
